Party leaders say their support for preserving the landmark ruling will not change. But they are looking at ways to soften the hard line, such as promoting adoption and embracing parental notification requirements for minors and bans on late-term abortions. Their thinking reflects a sense among strategists that Democratic presidential nominee John F. Kerry and the party's congressional candidates lost votes because the GOP conveyed a more compelling message on social issues.
That's all fine and good. It's not like anyone thinks abortion is an optimal solution. What the Democrats should counter is the religious right's moral equation of family planning (birth control) and abortion (especially late-term abortion, where pro-lifers usually root their rhetoric and imagery.) Pro-lifers act like family planning increases the incidence of abortion. Democrats should hammer this myth into oblivion and show how just the opposite is true.
This is the proposition you make to Americans: You want to stop abortion? You're not going to stop it by trying to get people to stop having sex. You're going to stop it by getting people to stop having procreative sex when the purpose is not to procreate. We're the party with the best plan for doing that. We believe every feotus should be the result of a deliberate and informed choice. That's what pro-choice means.
